Queen Mary, University of London Launches New LLM in Paris Programme

QMUL LLM in Paris

Dr Maxi Scherer (Academic Programme Director) & Yves Repiquet
(Former Dean of the Paris Bar (Bâtonnier), Partner, Jeantet & Associés, Paris) at the LLM in Paris Launch event

Developed by the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS), part of the School of Law at Queen Mary, the Paris LLM programme builds upon the success and reputation of the existing London based LLM. In bringing the expertise of Queen Mary’s School of Law to the heart of the French capital, the programme will allow students to maximise their professional opportunities with an international and comparative focused LLM in English, based on common law from a leading UK commercial law school.

Queen Mary is one of the largest Colleges of the University of London and the degrees awarded by the College are University of London degrees.

Thanks to a long-standing partnership between Queen Mary and the University of London Institute in Paris (ULIP), teaching will take place at ULIP’s premises overlooking the Esplanade des Invalides in the 7th arrondissement.

The programme, which will start in January 2013, will have two intakes per year –January and September. Courses will be taught in English by distinguished Queen Mary academics, including Lord Hoffmann, Former Judicial Member of the House of Lords and Honorary Professor at CCLS, with visiting lecturers from leading French law firms and other prestigious schools and universities. English language support is also included.

Students will have the opportunity to develop academic and professional expertise in specialised areas of commercial law, through a wide range of modules on subjects offered.

The four LLM Programmes are:

LLM in Banking and Finance Law   LLM in International Business Law

LLM in Intellectual Property Law    LLM in International Dispute Resolution and Economic Law

With a flexible model and specially tailored timetable of evening classes or intensive block teaching periods, the programme has been designed to promote compatibility with students’ work and other commitments.

The CCLS has developed partnerships with the Paris Bar School (EFB), the French Association of In-house Lawyers (AFJE) and SciencesPo Law School in Paris.

The Programme has been endorsed by several very senior legal figures in France, summarized below:

“The Paris LLM is an excellent opportunity for the Paris bar, offering students at the Paris Bar School (EFB) and young professionals during the first years of their training the possibility to obtain an English LLM degree while being in Paris. Such a qualification is a great added value to any potential employer.”

Yves Repiquet Former Dean of the Paris Bar (Bâtonnier), Partner, Jeantet & Associés, Paris

“As President of the French Association of In-House Lawyers (AFJE), I welcome the great opportunity offered by Queen Mary’s new programme to study an LLM in the heart of Paris. The programme prepares in-house lawyers for a successful career in an increasingly globalised world, allowing them to familiarize themselves with common law issues and improve their command of legal English.”

Hervé Delannoy, President of the French Association of In-House Lawyers (AFJE)

“A global rule of law is essential for today’s international economy. The common law is a pillar of this global system. It is a tribute to the vision of Queen Mary, University of London that it has brought the common law to the heart of the civil law in Paris.

Multinational banks and companies expect their internal and external lawyers to navigate comfortably between the main legal traditions. With its impressively varied syllabi, taught by a distinguished faculty, the Queen Mary Paris LLM represents a new and unique learning experience which offers an indisputable asset for the next generation of lawyers and business professionals.”

Dr Georges Affaki, Member of the Executive Committee and Head of Structured Finance, CIB Legal, BNP Paribas, Paris

“A programme particularly well-tailored to Paris-based students and professionals who are looking to focus their legal expertise on international dispute resolution.”

Isabelle Michou, Partner, Herbert Smith Paris LLP

The CCLS is also offering two bursaries to outstanding candidates applying for the new LLM in Paris programme:

  • 1x £7,500 bursary for a EFB student, and
  • 1 x £5,000 bursary open to all other applicants
