The LLM in International Commercial Law

The University of Warwick School of Law has recently announced the launch of its new LL.M. program in International Commercial Law (starting in October 2017). Warwick joins the growing number of UK, US, and international law schools that expand their postgraduate offerings that blend the corporate and commercial area with international or cross-border aspects. This trend is not surprising given that the demand for specialized LL.M. programs in these fields is strong, both from prospective students and employers.

Among the UK schools that offer specialized LL.M. programs in international corporate, business, commercial, or finance law are already:

  • London School of Economics, LSE (International Business Law)
  • University College London, UCL (International Banking and Finance Law; International Commercial Law)
  • King’s College London (International Business Law; International Financial Law; International Corporate & Commercial Law)
  • Queen Mary, University of London (International Business Law; International Economic Law; International Shipping Law)
  • Durham (European Trade and Commercial Law; International Trade and Commercial Law)
  • Edinburgh (International Banking Law and Finance; International Economic Law)
  • Birmingham (International Commercial Law)
  • Leicester (International Commercial Law)
  • Kent (International Commercial Law)
  • Nottingham (International Commercial Law)
  • City University (International Commercial Law)
  • Brunel (International Commercial Law)
  • Reading (International Commercial Law)
  • Bristol (International Commercial Law)
  • …and many more

In the United States, there are far less law schools with international corporate/business/commercial law LL.M. specializations, presumably because students normally focus their studies on U.S. corporate law. Nevertheless, schools that have programs dedicated to a more international perspective include:

  • Georgetown (International Business and Economic Law)
  • Boston University (International Business Law)
  • Fordham (International Business and Trade Law)
  • UC Davis (International Commercial Law)

Other law schools that offer such programs include:

  • Leiden (European and International Business Law)
  • Tilburg (International Business Law)
  • ILF, Frankfurt University (International Finance)
  • University of Zurich (International Banking and Finance Law; International Economic and Business Law)
  • Gallen (European and International Business Law)
  • Lausanne (International and European Economic and Commercial Law)
  • …and many more
