Boston University School of Law has introduced a new program called the Legal English Certificate Program (LECP). The program is targeted at international professionals – that is a broader category than just lawyers – who are interested in improving their general English and legal English communications skills.
The program is available in two tracks. The first track is for LL.M. candidates who have been admitted to Boston University’s LL.M. program but require stronger English communication skills. These candidates complete the LECP program first and then go on to complete the LL.M. The second track is for any professional, lawyer or otherwise, looking to strengthen their legal English training. Graduates under either track obtain a Legal English Certificate.
The program is generally offered over two semesters, although students in the LL.M. track must also complete a non-credit six week summer program as well. Courses offered include, Legal English, Introduction to U.S. Legal Culture, Legal Writing, Persuasive Advocacy, and Topics in American Law. Students in the LL.M. track also complete a course on Academic Skills for Successful Graduate Studies.
