2012 “Shanghai Ranking” (ARWU) Released

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) has released its 2012 ranking of the world’s top 100 universities. The ARWU – also known as the “Shanghai Ranking” – is published by the Center for World-Class Universities and the Institute of Higher Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China.

Six objectives form the basis for this ranking, among them the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; the number of highly cited researchers; the number of publications in leading journals; and per capita performance with respect to the size of an institution.

For Social Sciences, which includes law, the Academic Ranking of World Universities names the following universities (not all of which have law schools) in the top ten:

1. Harvard

2. Chicago

3. Berkeley

4. MIT

5. Columbia

6. Princeton

6. Stanford

8. Yale

9. Penn

10. NYU
